Five Tiny Cobras, One Big Milestone: Birsa Biological Park Makes History with Scientific Breeding

Birsa Biological Park has achieved a significant milestone in wildlife conservation and scientific breeding with the successful artificial incubation of Spectacled Cobra eggs, resulting in the birth of five healthy cobra hatchlings. In the park’s first such success, the eggs were carefully kept under controlled temperature and humidity for nearly 70 days before the hatchlings emerged safely. The achievement marks an important step forward in the park’s efforts towards reptile conservation and scientific breeding. The breeding programme was conducted under the guidance of zoo biologist and herpetologist Vivekanand Kumar, with the entire artificial incubation process carried out according to scientific standards. During the same period, the park also recorded the birth of eight healthy Sand Boa hatchlings, highlighting the growing focus on reptile conservation and modern wildlife management practices at the facility.
Birsa Biological Park Director Jabbar Singh said the achievement was the result of scientific methods, dedicated teamwork and a strong commitment to wildlife conservation. He added that the successful artificial incubation of cobra eggs for the first time could open new possibilities for future reptile conservation, research and scientific breeding programmes, further strengthening Jharkhand’s contribution to wildlife conservation.
The five cobra hatchlings and eight Sand Boa babies are currently being kept under the supervision of veterinary officer Dr Om Prakash Sahu and other experts. Their health and development are being closely monitored to ensure they grow safely. The achievement demonstrates how scientific techniques, expert supervision and dedicated conservation efforts can create new possibilities for protecting reptile species and strengthening wildlife management.
