Beyond Stereotypes: Jharkhand’s Transgender Community Is Rewriting Its Story Through Talent and Enterprise

For years, the transgender community was often pushed to the margins, with limited opportunities for education, employment and dignified livelihoods. That picture is gradually changing in Ranchi and neighbouring areas, where members of the community are building new identities through education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, beauty, digital content and other professions. One of the strongest examples is Dr Advita, who works as an examiner in the post-mortem department at RIMS. Through her professional expertise and dedication, she has shown that members of the transgender community can excel in positions that demand responsibility and specialised skills. Several others in Ranchi and Ramgarh are also creating their own space as makeup artists, beauty professionals, social media creators, event performers and entrepreneurs.
A notable example is the cafeteria started in Ramgarh by Himanshi, Sameera and Alya, which has become more than a source of livelihood and emerged as a symbol of changing social attitudes. Customers increasingly recognise them for their service, behaviour and work rather than their gender identity. Digital platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube have also opened new avenues for transgender professionals to showcase their skills, reach customers and earn independently. Himanshi says their aim is to prove that transgender people can successfully run businesses through hard work and honesty, while Sameera believes the growing acceptance from customers is an encouraging sign. Alya emphasises that education, skill development and entrepreneurship can help more transgender youth become self-reliant.
Their growing presence across professions is steadily challenging old stereotypes. Dr Advita believes people should be recognised for their ability and effort rather than their identity and encourages transgender youth to pursue education and their aspirations with confidence. Their journeys carry a simple but powerful message, the community does not seek sympathy, but equal opportunities to learn, work, build businesses and live with dignity.
