Beyond Rehabilitation: Building a More Empowered Future for Jharkhand’s Divyang Community

Jharkhand’s newly appointed State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Kritishree, visited CRC Ranchi to take stock of the rehabilitation and support services available to persons with disabilities. From physiotherapy and occupational therapy to speech and hearing care, prosthetics, special education and psychological counselling, the centre offers a range of services aimed at helping beneficiaries lead more independent lives. During the visit, the Commissioner also interacted with beneficiaries and their families, gaining a closer understanding of their needs and experiences.

The visit also brought attention to the need for stronger infrastructure and coordination. CRC Director Suryamani Prasad briefed the Commissioner on the centre’s ongoing rehabilitation, education and skill-development initiatives, as well as plans for its expansion. Appreciating the work being done, Kritishree stressed that quality disability services must remain accessible to those who need them most. She also highlighted the importance of securing permanent land for the centre and strengthening coordination between CRC and the state government.

A significant part of the visit was the distribution of assistive devices to 17 beneficiaries under the ADIP and Rashtriya Vayoshri schemes. Equipment worth around 2.71 lakh, including motorised tricycles, wheelchairs, hearing aids, walkers and mobility support devices, was provided to beneficiaries. The initiative reflected the larger goal of rehabilitation beyond medical care, helping people with disabilities gain greater mobility, independence and confidence. Kritishree emphasised that meaningful empowerment can only come through collective efforts involving government agencies, rehabilitation centres and the wider community.
