Ranchi’s Streets to Get Solar-Powered Cycling Tracks and Walkways

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Cyclists and pedestrians often face challenges during extreme weather—scorching heat in summer and heavy rains during monsoon. However, this problem is set to be resolved in Ranchi. Soon, neither cyclists nor pedestrians will have to worry about the harsh sun or getting drenched in the rain. The Road Construction Department in Ranchi is experimenting with an innovative project that involves installing solar panels along the roadsides. These panels will provide shade for pedestrians and cyclists while simultaneously generating electricity to illuminate the streets. The solar panels will be installed above newly constructed cycle tracks along selected roads. The electricity produced will be used to power streetlights, making this project not just eco-friendly but also energy-efficient. Two roads in Ranchi have already been selected for this initiative. These roads will be developed with modern infrastructure, including dedicated footpaths and cycle tracks. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared, and approvals are expected soon. The department aims to secure approval within this financial year and commence construction in the next. This marks the first time solar panels will be integrated into road construction projects in Jharkhand. The selected locations for this project include the stretch from Vivekananda School near Old Vidhan Sabha to Jagannathpur and Ring Road. These solar panels will not only generate electricity but also provide much-needed protection from the sun and rain, ensuring a safer and more comfortable journey for cyclists and pedestrians.
