FROM GARBAGE POINTS TO SELFIE SPOTS: RANCHI CELEBRATES ITS ‘SWACHH CHAMPIONS’
Ranchi is stepping into a new era of civic pride with a people-driven cleanliness movement that is redefining urban responsibility. While more than 2500 sanitation workers work tirelessly across the city’s 53 wards, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation has recognised that a city of nearly 15 lakh residents can become truly clean only when citizens step forward as partners. This vision has given rise to the “Swachh Champion” initiative, a programme that formally honours residents who voluntarily lead cleanliness and awareness drives in their neighbourhoods.
The impact is already visible in localities such as Lalpur, Harmu and Bariatu, where once-neglected garbage points have been transformed into colourful selfie spots through murals, plantation drives and community-led beautification. To sustain this momentum, ward-level inspection teams will select Swachh Champions based on public feedback, giving priority to citizens who promote waste segregation, discourage single-use plastics, maintain public spaces and care for greenery. Beyond recognition, these champions will be invited to serve as advisors in ward-level sanitation committees, ensuring that key civic concerns receive timely attention.
The initiative also aligns with the city’s forward-looking waste management roadmap. The municipal corporation is preparing to launch 12 new Material Recovery Facility centres to recycle dry waste such as plastic and metal, where Swachh Champions will act as a vital bridge between scrap collectors and residents. By turning waste into wealth and nurturing a spirit of healthy cleanliness competition, Ranchi is steadily moving closer to its aspiration of standing among India’s cleanest cities.
